Medical Laboratory Assistant

The Medical Lab Assistant Program at the Arizona Medical Training Institute (also referred to as the Clinical Lab Assistant Program) is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in clinical laboratory settings, such as Hospital Medical Center Clinical Laboratories, Reference Laboratories, Research Laboratories, and Physician Office Laboratories (POLs). The Program design is for the practicing Phlebotomist or for the Phlebotomist that has recently completed an approved Phlebotomy Training Program. Not a Phlebotomist? Non-Phlebotomist applicants simply must complete a three weekend Basic Phlebotomy Module preceding the start of their MLA Program. Students who take the Basic Phlebotomy Module will not be eligible to sit for the ASCP National Phlebotomy Registration Exam. Students desiring to be nationally certified as a Phlebotomist should complete AMTI s Phlebotomy Technician Program prior to the Medical Lab Assistant Program.

For 2016, the Medical Lab Assistant Blended eLearning Program is a 186-hour course comprised of an equivalent 90-hour eLearning web based application. coupled with 96 hours of classroom and lab instruction. Didactic instruction is followed by a minimum 120 hour externship at a CLIA approved laboratory site provided by the School. Students taking the Basic Phlebotomy Module will take 10 hours of eLearning web based application and 48 hours of classroom and lab instruction. Successful completion of the eLearning, classroom and laboratory externship will result in Certification as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. Students will be eligible to take the American Medical Technologist National Certification exam after graduation upon satisfying AMTI s requirements.
As an overview, the Medical Lab Assistant curriculum prepares individuals to perform clinical laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and transfusion medicine that may be used in the maintenance of health and diagnosis/treatment of disease. The course is designed to inform students of the practical methods of performing basic medical laboratory procedures targeting specific areas such as:

Laboratory Safety/Quality Control

Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking

Basic Point-of-Care Testing

Clinical Immunology/Serology

What are the MLA program prerequisites?:

Must be at least 18 years of age, a high school graduate, or equivalent and a Certified Phlebotomist, or has recently completed an approved Phlebotomy Training Program or a Phlebotomist with 1040 employed hours performing collections. Non-Phlebotomist applicants must complete the Basic Phlebotomy Module before the start of their MLA Program.

Must complete the AMTI Health Declaration. The Health Declaration is a health and safety document insuring that essential immunizations and clearance for participation by a licensed health care provider are satisfied prior to engaging in the classroom portion of the course. The student must provide documentation of both health and accident insurance.

Must have CPR at the Health Care Provider level and First Aid.

Students must be willing to submit to a drug test and/or criminal background check, if requested. Note: Students should be aware that Employers could require a drug test and/or criminal background check as part of their employment process. Please be aware that if a student fails the drug test, criminal background check fails to become immunized they cannot become employed.

What are the MLA program completion requirements?:

  • Complete 186 hour equivalent eLearning and classroom requirement. Non-Phlebotomist students, in addition, must complete a 58 hour equivalent eLearning and classroom requirement as a prerequisite.
  • Complete 120 hour laboratory practicum.
  • Pass chapter competency exams and skill assessments at 80% or higher. Pass the classroom final exam at 80% or higher. Summary preceptor evaluation of clinical practicum must be at 85% or higher.
  • Optional: Pass the AMT National Certification Exam.

How much does MLA training cost?:

Course Tuition is $1,890.00. For Non-Phlebotomist applicants taking the Basic Phlebotomy Module, course tuition is $2,300.00. Tuition includes all textbooks/lab materials, uniform top and all supplies. Students will incur the cost of immunizations if not up to date and health assessment as well as the cost for CPR and First Aid.

Students, at the time of registration, can pay the tuition in full, or utilize a 2-payment, 3-payment or 6-payment approach in meeting the tuition requirements for the program. Tell me about eCashier .

Where can an MLA work after graduation?:

  • Medical Laboratory Assistants work in a variety of different settings, including hospitals, independent reference laboratories and in offices of physicians. Rapid job growth and excellent job opportunities for Medical Laboratory Assistants are expected. Most jobs will continue to be in hospitals, but employment will grow faster in other settings. Employment of laboratory workers is expected to grow 14 percent between 2006 and 2016, faster than average for all occupations. The volume of laboratory tests continues to increase with both population growth and the development of new types of tests. Median annual wage and salary earnings of Medical Laboratory Assistants in 2008 were $13.50 per hour or $28,080 annually.
