Progress Energy is an electric company providing service to the Carolinas and certain parts of Florida. The company has several options for people who have trouble paying their bills, and understands the fluctuation of temperatures and changes in the season will cause differences in your bill.

How To Pay The Bill

Progress Energy offers several different methods to ensure your bill is paid. You can pay your bill by mail, in person at a pay station, by phone, or online. You may also have it automatically drafted from your bank account. You can also opt to have your bill delivered by email.

Pay stations: To pay your bill in person at a pay station, visit this payment center locater to find the merchant closest to you. Different pay stations may charge fees for the service. Payments made before 5 p.m will post the same business day, but if you are scheduled for disconnect, you will need to call with the receipt number to verify payment to ensure service remains on.

Pay by phone: To pay your bill by phone, call customer service at: 1-800-452-2777 in the Carolinas or 1-800-700-8744 in Florida, and follow the prompts to speak with an agent to help you process the payment. There will be a fee for processing the payment over the phone.

Pay online: To pay your Progress Energy bill online visit and enter your account information. There will a $4.95 convenience fee charged separately by the payment processor for using this service.

How The Penalty Fees Work

When you do not pay your bill by the due date listed, you will incur a late fee of 1.5% per month that the payment is not brought to current status. If you are consistently late, you may be required to pay another security deposit, equal to twice the amount of the average monthly bill at the address. If the service is disconnected, you will have to pay a fee to have it reconnected, and if it must be reconnected after hours or on the weekend, the reconnect fee will be higher.

If you cannot make a payment, call customer service right away to let them know, and see what you can do to make a payment arrangement. In most cases, the company will be flexible and work with you. If you have ever missed a payment arrangement, they will not make another with you.

Progress Energy offers LIHEAP home energy assistance program to customers that can t pay your bill. This federally-funded program assists low-income customers pay your Progress Energy heating or cooling bill. In order to qualify for assistance, you must meet the requirements of the program.

Will They Work With Me To Pay My Bill?

Yes, they will! Call them as soon as possible to make arrangements. If you miss the arranged pay date, you will get turned off immediately, and will not be eligible for another payment agreement. If you have a child under the age of 6 in the home, or an elderly adult in the home over the age of 70, or who requires power to run a medical device, the power cannot be turned off in your home without permission from the Utilities Security Commission. As long as you are making payments on the past due balance and keeping customer service aware of the situation at hand, you will be able to avoid a disconnect.
