US Car Hire Under 25

In the United States all drivers aged under 25 are considered to be a greater risk than those over 25, so for drivers aged 21 – 24 there is a surcharge levied to protect the car hire companies. If charged locally, this is usually charged at $25 per day, plus the local sales tax if applicable. It is important to realise that this fee is simply a surcharge, not an additional insurance – your insurance levels will not be any different to that of the drivers aged 25 or more.

In Canada, there is no Young Driver Package available, so drivers aged 21 – 24 will have to pay $25 CAD per day to drive. To search for a car in Canada therefore, please select your age as 25+, and then you can make your choice from any supplier and pay the daily surcharge on arrival.

Booking the Young Driver Package

Our Young Driver Package for drivers under 25 years is only available with rentals from Alamo and National. so you must look for locations serviced by Alamo or National, if you search using locations other than those serviced by these companies, you will not get any results back at all.

Please enter your age group as 21-24 yrs when checking for a quote – the results you receive will have the Young Driver Package already added to the price for you – so you will be seeing a total rate with nothing else to pay on arrival. You will not be charged the normal $25 per day levied on drivers under 25. You cannot add a Sat Nav unit to the Young Driver Package in advance but, you hire one locally from the desk on arrival. The daily charge for a Sat Nav from Alamo or National is $11.99 plus local taxes.

Also included within your rental will be:

  • Unlimited Mileage,
  • CDW,
  • $1 Million Liability Cover,
  • Sales Tax,
  • State Tax,
  • Airport Fees, C FC (Subject to location),
  • Mechanical Assistance,
  • Initial tank of fuel
  • Up to 3 additional drivers over 25
  • Or, 2 more drivers aged 21 – 24 years, making 3 drivers under 25 in total.

Credit Card is Essential

As with all drivers, the young driver must have a full licence from their issuing country and a credit card in their own name. A ‘hold’ of $500 will be placed onto the credit card, which will be deactivated when the car is returned. This card will also be used for any local charges such as one-way fees, Sat Nav or eTolls. Alamo may accept a VISA or MasterCard debit card at Orlando and Sanford airports in Florida only, but this is always at the managers discretion. All other locations require a credit card in the name of the lead driver. Pre-paid credit cards are not accepted by any rental car company.

Young Driver Package – FAQ’s

Does this Young Driver Package mean that I don’t have to pay $25 per day when I get there?

Yes, absolutely. The Young Driver Package is paid instead of paying the under-age driver surcharge locally.

If your young driver package is included in a quote or reservation, can you be absolutely sure there will be no additional charges from the rental desk when I come to collect the vehicle?

The Young Driver Package includes everything that you need to drive legally – so – as long as you don’t sign up for any optional extras such as Sat Nav, Enhanced Roadside assistance or an upgrade for instance, you will have no other charges when you arrive. If there is a one-way fee applicable to your rental, then obviously that does still have to be paid on arrival.

Can my friend drive for free?

Yes, you can have up to 3 drivers aged 21 – 24 at no additional charge. You can also have drivers aged 25 or over at no additional charge.

As I will be the only driver I won’t need to add others, is there a cheaper option?

Sadly not, the additional drivers are included at no extra cost, so there is nothing to be saved by not including any other drivers.

How long must I have held my driving licence to hire a car?

Alamo and National do not have a minimum period that you must have held a driving licence, as long as you have a full licence, and can legally drive in your country, you can hire a car with our Young Driver Package in the USA.

Do I pay now, later, or on arrival?

What does ‘First tank of fuel free’ mean?

This means that you will receive the car with a full tank of fuel and can return the car as empty as possible.

Must I have a credit card?

Unless your hire commences at Orlando or Sanford airports in Florida, then you absolutely must have a credit card in the name of the lead driver to present at the time you collect the car – this is for the security deposit. At Orlando or Sanford a Visa Debit is acceptable.

Can I use a Visa Debit card or cash for the security deposit instead?

The short answer is no, a Visa Debit card or cash is not acceptable for your security deposit anywhere in the US. If the lead driver does not have a credit card in his/her name, they may not be able to collect the car, and no refund is due in that instance. The two exceptions to this are Orlando International Airport, and Sanford Airport in Florida.

Are one-way fees included in your car rental for under 25’s?

No, a one-way fee, if it apply to your rental, must be paid directly to the desk on arrival. It cannot be pre-paid. It will be charged to the credit card that you use for your security deposit.

If I hire an SUV from California, can I return it to New York even though it is bigger than I could hire from NY?

Absolutely, New York has a restriction on the size of vehicle you can hire from a location within New York State, but you can return any size of vehicle that you have hired from another state, to any young driver location in New York.
